BREAST REDUCTION

Breast reduction, also referred to as a reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reduce the size and improve the shape of the breasts. Mr Harris carries out over 100 breast reduction operations per year and is acknowledged to be an expert having lectured Nationally and Internationally to other plastic surgeons on his technique.

Typically, women who are candidates for a breast reduction have physical symptoms related to the weight or shape of their breasts. The operation can therefore lead to enormous improvements in quality of life that patients report after their surgery.

This is measurable using patient questionnaires, which show improvements in psychological, functional and sexual well-being, and may reduce the neck, back and shoulder pain associated with large breasts.

The procedure of a breast reduction is carried out under general anaesthetic and takes between 2 and 3 hours. Most patients stay overnight in the hospital afterwards but it can be carried out as a day case procedure if preferred. The operation involves removal of breast tissue and skin, and then reshaping and lifting the breast to give both functional and aesthetic benefits.

There will be a scar around the pigmented areolar, which allows the nipple to be elevated. The diameter of the pigmented areolar is also reduced. There is also a vertical scar, running down from the areolar and finally, a horizontal scar in the crease of the breast is often needed. Most breast reduction operations are combined with a small amount of liposuction to the side of the breast to reduce the width overall.

The traditional breast reduction can produce a slightly boxy, flat and unattractive breast shape, and Mr Harris has worked extremely hard in the last few years to produce a more youthful and projected breast for his patients.

This technique is known as the ‘FIT pattern breast reduction’, the principles of which are shown in the animation below.

Despite the scarring, a breast reduction operation produces the highest degree of post-operative patient satisfaction of all plastic surgery procedures.

How a breast reduction can benefit you

Breasts are a symbol of femininity, but for some individuals, their size can lead to physical discomfort, emotional distress, and a diminished quality of life. Breast reduction can offer transformative benefits that go beyond physical changes. If you’re considering this procedure, here’s how breast reduction can enhance your well-being and help you embrace a more comfortable and confident life.

Relief from Physical Discomfort

Large and heavy breasts can lead to a variety of physical discomforts. Back, neck, and shoulder pain are common complaints among those with overly large breasts, as the weight strains the supporting muscles. Additionally, bra straps can dig into the shoulders, causing painful indentations. Breast reduction surgery can alleviate these discomforts by reducing the size and weight of the breasts, allowing for better posture and reduced strain on the upper body.

Enhanced Physical Activity

Engaging in physical activities and exercise can be challenging for individuals with large breasts. High-impact activities like running or even basic cardio exercises can be uncomfortable due to breast movement and lack of proper support. Breast reduction can open the door to a more active lifestyle, enabling you to participate in exercises and sports without the hindrance of overly large breasts.

Improved Body Image and Self-Esteem

Breast size can significantly impact body image and self-esteem. Many individuals with large breasts may feel self-conscious, struggle to find clothing that fits well, and even experience difficulty participating in social activities due to insecurity. Breast reduction surgery can help individuals achieve a more proportionate and balanced body shape, leading to improved body image and heightened self-confidence.

Clothing Options

Finding clothing that fits comfortably and flatters your figure can be a challenge when you have disproportionately large breasts. Often, individuals find themselves choosing clothes to minimise the appearance of their breasts, which can limit their fashion choices. After breast reduction, you’ll have a wider range of clothing options available, as your new breast size will be better suited to different styles and cuts.

Emotional Well-Being

The emotional impact of overly large breasts should not be underestimated. Many individuals experience emotional distress, including feelings of self-consciousness and even depression, due to their breast size. Breast reduction can alleviate these emotional burdens, fostering a sense of liberation and empowerment that positively impacts overall well-being.

Customised and Personalised Procedure

One of the greatest benefits of breast reduction is its customisation. The procedure is tailored to your unique needs and desires, ensuring that the results align with your goals and preferences. Mr Harris will discuss your expectations, evaluate your breast size and shape, and develop a personalised plan to achieve the best possible outcome for you.

In conclusion, breast reduction is not just about reducing breast size; it’s about enhancing your quality of life and overall well-being. By alleviating physical discomfort, boosting confidence, and providing a renewed sense of freedom, breast reduction empowers individuals to embrace their bodies with comfort and pride. If you’ve been contemplating breast reduction, consider the transformative benefits that await you on the journey toward a more comfortable and confident you.
