ANAESTHESIA FOR
PLASTIC SURGERY
If your procedure requires a general anaesthetic or sedation, this will be provided by a consultant anaesthetist with specialist training in anaesthesia for plastic surgery.
Mr Harris works with a small team of dedicated consultant anaesthetists who cover both his private practice and also work in the NHS.
You will meet your anaesthetist on the day of your surgery and you will have an opportunity to discuss your anaesthetic at this time.
Your anaesthetist is present with you throughout the whole of your anaesthetic and your vital signs are very closely monitored. The use of modern anaesthetic techniques such as total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) and monitoring the depth of anaesthesia with bispectral index (BIS) have improved recovery and decreased post-operative nausea to very low levels. Overall, you can be reassured that anaesthesia delivered by a consultant anaesthetist in a well-equipped modern hospital is very safe and well tolerated.
You may feel that you have a pre-existing medical condition that might affect your anaesthetic or make you feel that you are at a higher risk. This should be mentioned early in your consultation with Mr Harris and any relevant pre-operative investigations will be organised.
It is quite understandable to have concerns and anxieties regarding your anaesthetic. While minor side effects after anaesthesia such as sore throat and nausea are not uncommon, serious problems are extremely rare.
